I just completed Betty Smith’s novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and was floored by the brilliance of the story. The writer completely held my attention the entire 400+ pages and even in the wee hours of the morning, I had to get up to continue reading.

An emotional story of a family living in Brooklyn, NY during the early 1900’s told through the eyes of the eldest child, Francie. With each turn of a page, I was with them in their struggles when hunger was common to the young family and their daily concern of trying to make ends meet. When happier times are blessed upon the family, I was genuinely smiling for their moment of peace.

This novel focuses on what the family must do to survive and the road they take to a better life for them. It furthered my belief of how little we need to maintain a suitable way of life and how much constant waste surrounds us all. A must read for those that value life and the pursuit of happiness.
